In a world where schedules run amok and family life is often chaotic, Jana Ina (48) and her partner, Giovanni Zarrella (47), manage to keep their love alive. With two teenagers, busy careers, and packed schedules, they've never let each other slip through the cracks. "We're each other's biggest cheerleaders. No competition here, just mutual support," Jana Ina beams during a recording for Eon at the Essen Testing Lab.
Despite the harmonious vibes, their family life is far from laid-back. Between shows, broadcasts, school, and more, their calendars are a ticking time bomb. So how do they avoid detonation? "We have a shared family calendar for everything - even the kids' appointments. And we give ourselves blocks of time exclusively for us," explains the presenter. Family is their top priority: "We show up for our children's special moments, even if it means we don't get much sleep. We'll catch up later."
The Zarrellas: Making Plans for Their 20th Wedding Anniversary
In August, the couple will celebrate their 20th wedding anniversary, but there's no hint of any grand plans yet. As spontaneous individuals, they tend to decide things on the fly, as Jana Ina chuckles: " right now, we're just winging it. But we'll figure it out." Despite their lives playing out in the public eye, Jana Ina and Giovanni know exactly where the boundaries between personal and professional lie. "I share bits of our daily life on Instagram, make jokes about raising teenagers. But our kids are off-limits, and that's respected," she adds.
From the supermarket to the bakery, people treat the Zarrellas like old friends: "My husband talks to every baker, sings tunes, and chats up shoppers... as long as they're friendly, we're friendly, too!"
The Zarrellas work well together not only in their roles as parents and partners but also in their energy-saving endeavors. "He monitors the smart tariffs so I can charge my car when it's cheapest. I'm the one who makes sure lights are off and devices are unplugged," Jana Ina shares during the video shoot about energy transition. The kids join in, too, often reminding them, "Hey, it's bright outside, turn off the light!"
Living Sustainably, One Step at a Time
Born in Brazil, Jana Ina considers sustainability a crucial part of her family's daily life. Ditching a hybrid for a fully electric car was the first step; installing solar panels is next on the agenda. "We noticed them at a neighbor's house and thought, 'That looks good!'" she recounts. "On our walks, I gathered info. If I can power my car through solar panels, that's ideal!"
Jana Ina's newfound knowledge about her car's charging habits gives her a sense of accomplishment: "I thought my charging box was broken at first. But now I know: I have a flexible tariff. The car charges at night when electricity demand is lower - better for the environment and my wallet." Even husband Giovanni is pleased. "He's a true German frugal type," Jana Ina notes with a laugh.
"We always make sure not to leave devices plugged in all day. You don't need a smartphone charger to stay plugged in 24/7. Just plug it in when you need it." With countless ways to save energy nowadays, tiny actions can make a big impact by the end of the year. Jana Ina believes everyone should contribute: "It's about saving electricity and helping the environment. That's what it's all about: everyone should do their part."
