A Playful Summer Retreat: ARP's Tetris House in Antiparos, Greece
Nestled on the shores of the Aegean Sea in the picturesque island of Antiparos, Greece, ARP's Tetris House is a unique architectural gem that blends traditional Cycladic vernacular with contemporary design.
The house, designed by ARP-Architecture Research Practice (Argyro Pouliovali), is a testament to the architect's innovative approach. Inspired by the basic geometries of Tetris blocks, the house consists of simple geometric volumes that interlock like pieces in a three-dimensional puzzle. This volumetric logic is seamlessly integrated with local materials and forms, creating a strong material connection with the landscape.
The unfinished concrete structure of the site has been reused and adapted into a summer house. The design embraces local vernacular by incorporating sharp plastered surfaces and substantial masonry made of local stone. The house's edges are marked by traditional, groutless stone walls, a testament to the blend of local craftsmanship and available technology.
The layout of the house departs from a conventional arrangement, offering a more communal way of living with rooms spread around the body of water. At the heart of the house lies an inner courtyard, featuring a pool that reinforces the interplay between architecture and nature typical of Cycladic tradition.
The design aims to achieve a balance between past and present, between privacy and openness, and between structure and landscape. The house echoes the Cycladic vernacular, with picturesque, white-washed walls and domed roofs, but brings a contemporary touch through its crisp edges. The architecture is a process of careful subtraction and precise addition, resulting in a house that creates a quiet presence on the site while subtly reflecting local construction traditions.
On the upper floor, there is a living room and a principal suite with a large window offering views of the port. The upper floor houses living spaces with views of the port, adding an air of spatial generosity to the house. The house has a dynamic interplay of light and shadow, creating spaces that are both intimate and open.
ARP's Tetris House is a unique example of how traditional and contemporary elements can be harmoniously combined to create a space that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing. The house, named after the retro arcade game Tetris, is a testament to ARP's innovative design philosophy and their commitment to creating architecture that engages with its surroundings while preserving privacy and intimacy typical of the Greek island vernacular.
ARP's Avlakia House was featured in the Architects' Directory in 2022, further cementing their reputation as a leading architectural practice. The Tetris House is a testament to their creative vision and their ability to create unique and inspiring architectural spaces.
