Get ready to pedal your way to relaxation! The upcoming Bike-Inn, planned for the outskirts of Sambach, Otterbach, will offer weary cyclists a well-deserved rest and a tasty bite to eat. This exciting project is the brainchild of Otterbach-Otterberg Verbandsgemeinde, as announced by Mayor Harald Westrich (SPD).
The old building that once housed the American AFN transmitter will undergo a complete makeover, transforming into a modern loft-style establishment, while maintaining its distinctive American architectural charm. The outdoor terrace will provide seating for cyclists and walkers alike, offering a chance to unwind and enjoy the fresh air.
Bike rest stop on a budget
The Verbandsgemeinde has secured 250,000 euros from the EU's LEADER funding program. An additional 650,000 euros are estimated to be needed for the project, with funding expected to cover the remaining costs. "We're fortunate to participate in the regional future program, which will largely cover the remaining funding," says Westrich.
A hub of activity and history
Located along the scenic Bachbahn bike path, the Bike-Inn is set to become a bustling hub of activity, with the addition of a historic, 140-ton steam locomotive nearby. This massive engine will find its new home near the Stellwerk museum in Otterbach. "The Bike-Inn is our economic tourism project," says Westrich.
Construction dates and interested parties are still under wraps, although Westrich revealed that three inquiries have already been received. "A great concept will be key," he emphasized, without disclosing any further details.
A community gathering place
The Bike-Inn isn't just for cyclists – it's a meeting place for the young and the old! The Verbandsgemeinde Otterbach-Otterberg also plans to open the Bike-Inn kitchen from Wednesday to Sunday. Beyond the culinary delights, the rooms, excluding the kitchen, will serve as a gathering space for seniors and youth.
The official opening date for the Bike-Inn in Otterbach remains to be announced, but excitement is building, with Mayor Harald Westrich optimistic for a 2027 launch.
