Alexandria's Mount Vernon Trail Expansion Begins August 18
Alexandria's Mount Vernon Trail is set for an upgrade. The city will widen the trail from 4.5 feet to 10 feet along East Abingdon Drive, north of Slaters Lane. The project, led by Rachel Flynn, begins on August 18, weather permitting, and is a top 10 priority in the Transportation Master Plan.
The project will require a full closure of East Abingdon Drive north of Slaters Lane from August 18 to early October. During construction hours, the road will be closed between Slaters Lane and the George Washington Parkway. Drivers seeking to access the northbound parkway lanes will need to make a right turn from westbound Slaters Lane.
The work is part of the Alexandria Mobility Plan's strategy to create a safe, well-maintained, and comfortable bicycling network. The city is also working on the East Abingdon Drive Bike Lanes project to fill a 600-foot gap in the bicycle network. Both projects are funded through a federal grant.
During the Mount Vernon Trail widening project, the sidewalk and trail access point north of Slaters Lane will be closed. More information about the project is available on the city's website.
The Mount Vernon Trail widening project at East Abingdon Drive is set to improve the city's bicycle network. The project, a top 10 priority, will require a temporary road closure from August 18 to early October. The city encourages drivers to plan alternative routes during this time.
