Announcing Fire and Burn Hazard Recall of Over 600,000 Frigidaire Mini Fridges: Action Plan

In a recent announcement, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has issued a recall for 634,000 Frigidaire-brand mini fridges. The recalled models are:

  • EFMIS129 (excluding EFMIS129-B and EFMIS129-C), serial numbers A2001 to A2308
  • EFMIS137, serial numbers A2001 to A2312
  • EFMIS149, serial numbers A2001 to A2308
  • EFMIS175, serial numbers A2001 to A2310

These mini fridges, sold in 6- and 9-can sizes and in various colors, have internal electrical components that can short circuit and ignite the surrounding plastic housing, creating a fire hazard.

The recalled mini fridges were manufactured by ShangYu North Electron Manufacture Co. Ltd. (China) and sold by Curtis International. They were sold at Walmart and other stores nationwide, as well as online at Walmart.com and Amazon.com.

The CPSC has reported at least 26 incidents of the mini fridges smoking, sparking, burning, melting, overheating, and catching fire. Two consumers reported smoke inhalation injuries due to the mini fridges. Property damages from these incidents totaled more than $700,000.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission's recall extends not only to the affected mini fridges, but also to home-and-garden appliances, as the hazardous internal electrical components could possibly pose a risk in other similar products from the same manufacturer. To maintain a safe home-and-garden lifestyle, it's essential to adhere to the recall guidelines and check if any of the recalled Frigidaire-brand mini fridges, or potentially other home-and-garden appliances, are part of one's household.
