Aschaffenburg Kicks Off 'Abpflastern' Greening Initiative with Nilkheim Square Redesign
Aschaffenburg has kicked off a greening initiative, 'abpflastern', by redesigning a small square in Nilkheim. The project aims to replace sealed surfaces with greenery, enhancing the urban climate and quality of life for residents.
The initiative began with the unsealing and redesign of the square at the corner of Buchenweg/Ulmenweg in Nilkheim. Approximately 315 sqm of sealed surface was transformed into a lawn, with three trees and new benches added. The fountain at the square was retained during the transformation.
'Abpflastern' is a long-term, nationwide competition organized by students of the University of Applied Sciences for Societal Design in Koblenz. It encourages citizens to participate by entering unsealed areas into an online portal. The competition has three categories: large city, medium-sized city, and small city. Each month, a 'Star of the Month' project will be crowned, with the three winning municipalities being honored in November 2025.
Aschaffenburg's participation in 'abpflastern' is a step towards creating more lively, greener urban spaces. The initiative, focused on improving the urban climate and enhancing residents' quality of life, has already seen success with the Nilkheim square redesign. Citizens are encouraged to contribute by submitting unsealed areas for consideration.
