Bremen's Sögestraße Carillon Returns to Life After 30-Year Silence

In a celebration marking the 50th anniversary of the "Herdsman with Pigs" bronze sculpture, Bremen's carillon in Sögestraße has once again started to ring, ending a 30-year silence.

The carillon, originally installed in 1948, was a symbol of peace and freedom after the war. It was out of order for over three decades due to a breakdown. The revival of this historical instrument was a collaborative effort between the Bremen carillon society, local authorities, and several other organisations.

The Bremen carillon society played a key role in organising and promoting the revival effort, while the local authorities facilitated and supported the installation and public performances. The project was also supported by KSM Immobilien GmbH, the owner of Sögestraße 70, Mrs. Keunecke, Hoefert Elektro, the local office (Mitte district council), the trade supervision, the state office for monument preservation, and the Senator for Building, Mobility, and Urban Development.

CS City-Service GmbH, BID Sögestraße, and the Senator for Economy, Harbors, and Transformation were the ones who initiated the revival of the carillon. The restoration process took a year and approximately 10,000 euros were invested. The main work was carried out by Herford Electric Motor Works and Gravermann Bell and Clock Systems.

Real estate entrepreneur Marco Bremermann spoke a few words about the historical significance of the day, while Oliver Rau, director of marketing and tourism at WFB, highlighted the "pigs" as a photo opportunity for generations. The event was celebrated with the merchant's table.

On September 13th, the Westminster chime rang out over Sögestraße for the first time in 50 years, signifying the successful restoration of the carillon. It will now ring daily at 12 noon, every half hour until 8 pm, adding a melodious charm to the streets of Bremen.
