Berlin's Circus Moon in Prenzlauer Berg Preserves 20-Year-Old City Ambiance

In the heart of Berlin's eclectic Prenzlauer Berg neighbourhood, nestled between the S-Bahn tracks and Ernst-Thälmann-Park settlement, lies Circus Mondo. This unique circus venue, located at Lilli-Henoch-Straße, 10405 Berlin, has been a hub for artistic expression for almost seven years.

Originally known as the 'Children of the Moon', the team behind Circus Mondo performed in burned-out halls, parks, and one-time locations before finding their permanent home. The circus director, Max Mohr, hails from the Berlin club scene and honed his skills at a circus school.

Circus Mondo is more than just a circus; it's a meeting place for Berlin's artist scene. During the week, it serves as a hub for theatre, dance, and music events. On weekends, it hosts concerts and offers a diverse programme that draws artists from all over the world.

Recently, the "Wikabarett" event at Circus Mondo featured a mix of English and Spanish music, attracting a diverse audience. Notable performers such as Chico Trujillo, a band from Chile with almost cult status, have graced the Circus Mondo stage.

The circus director, Max Mohr, allows artists to play their content uncensored, believing that the performances are for the hardened. This approach led to some controversial moments, such as an artist interacting with the audience, undressing, and handling his own excrement during a performance, causing some audience members to be shocked.

For families with children, there's a daily children's show from Friday to Sunday. The path to Circus Mondo from Greifswalder Straße involves heading north, turning right between two parking lots, passing a skate park, and following small wooden signs.

Circus Mondo shares the former goods yard with six or seven other collectives, including music collectives, a garden project, and a welding workshop. The reputation of Circus Mondo within the national and international artist scene has been built up and worked hard for in recent years, thanks in part to its patron, Babel e.V., and the production director, Maria Dedio, who oversees operations from a wooden-clad bar surrounded by mismatched stools from old bars.

At Circus Mondo, the weekly entertainment events interweave with lifestyle choices, offering a blend of circus performances, music concerts, and theatre shows. For families, a children's show is available daily from Friday to Sunday.

Beyond its circus performances, Circus Mondo's diverse programming extends to home-and-garden projects, welding workshops, and music collectives, making it a significant hub for various artistic communities in Berlin.
