Celebrating a century and a half: Böhmler im Tal transitions from simplistic clothing to elegant furniture.
Boehmler Furniture Store in Munich Commemorates 150th Anniversary
Luxury retailer Boehmler Möbelhaus in Munich celebrated its milestone 150th anniversary last Friday with a grand party attended by approximately 200 employees, former employees, suppliers, and customers. Notable attendees included celebrity customers Marika Rökk, Jopi Heesters, and Heidi Klum.
Located in the heart of the city, Boehmler is a household name for Munich residents and beyond. Known for its transformation from an affordable furniture store to a high-end interior design brand, the store offers everything from designer furniture to complete interior construction with lighting and acoustic systems.
Thomas Boehmler, the great-grandson of the company founder Johann Georg Boehmler, shared stories of the store's rich history during a recent visit with AZ. The Olympic Village, BMW cylinder, and Allianz Arena are among the buildings equipped by Boehmler, from floors to interior design. The family business received the "Floor Project of the Year" award for a parquet project in the Five Courts and counts a significant project in Abu Dhabi as its largest order to date.
Boehmler's history mirrors Munich's development. Johann Georg Boehmler moved from near Esslingen to Munich, where he completed an apprenticeship as a commercial clerk and found employment in a featherbed and furniture store in the old town. He fell in love with Katharina Maerz, daughter of the house, and the couple opened a store for canvas, sackcloth, and ropes in the Herrnstraße with a dowry of 1800 talers.
The store moved to the valley, offering carpets, curtains, and upholstery fabrics. Boehmler soon became a court supplier, building a furniture factory in Klenzestraße. In 1894, he bought the plot where the main store stands today. In 1897, Boehmler opened the most modern store in the city, even attracting Prince Regent Luitpold as a visitor.
Starting in the 1980s, as competition from budget furniture stores grew too intense, Boehmler transformed into a high-end furniture store, featuring exclusive designer brands. Today, Boehmler is among the leading German interior designers. The store's repositioning and emphasis on upscale offerings have solidified its reputation as a trendsetter and tastemaker in Munich's furniture market. "Our main business is planning and realizing entire rooms and houses with exclusive brands," says Thomas Boehmler. "Our customers even come from as far as Florida."
When it comes to his own home, Thomas Boehmler describes his style as modern, minimalist, and understated, with furniture of course, from Boehmler.
