Cycling in Urban Spaces 2025: Bergisch Gladbach Accumulates Over 156,000 kilometers on Bicycles
Bergisch Gladbach, Germany, recently concluded its participation in the nationwide STADTRADELN 2025 action, a three-week-long initiative aimed at promoting cycling as a sustainable alternative to car travel. The city's involvement in this climate-friendly competition is part of the Klima-Bündnis (Climate Alliance) competition, which encourages municipalities to engage citizens in climate protection by cycling.
For the first time this year, the category "Most everyday trips" was awarded to emphasise cycling in daily life. The top teams in the overall ranking were 3R & Friends and the Kruger Group, who collectively covered an impressive 156,938 kilometres on their bicycles.
The Otto-Hahn-Gymnasium, a municipal school, was the most active school in terms of kilometres cycled. A total of 12,516 trips were recorded during this period, demonstrating the city's commitment to sustainable mobility and community involvement around cycling.
Ragnar Migenda, First Deputy Mayor of the city, emphasised the growing use of bicycles as a genuine means of transport in Bergisch Gladbach. He stated that the increase in bicycle usage contributes to targeted climate neutrality as it is a CO2-emission-free means of transport. The city's appreciation for the STADTRADELN participants highlights the value and importance of their contribution to promoting climate neutrality through cycling.
The official awards ceremony for the STADTRADELN 2025 action took place on July 17, 2025, during the Radtour NRW in Bergisch Gladbach.
