In the heart of Detmold's old town, a new initiative aimed at improving accessibility for elderly and mobility-impaired individuals was unveiled on September 9, 2025. Mayor Frank Hilker presented the first Hopp' ma'-Zone, marking a significant step forward in facilitating a relaxed visit to the city.
The Hopp' ma'-Zone is part of a city portal initiative and is located at the corner of Exterstraße/Krumme Straße/Lange Straße. The existing loading zones here and another one opposite Martin-Luther-Kirche on Schülerstraße have been transformed into Hopp' ma' zones, clearly marked with signs.
The concept of Hopp' ma' was developed to cater specifically to the needs of elderly and/or mobility-impaired individuals. Vehicles can stop at these zones to allow easy and relaxed entry or exit for this group. Each Hopp' ma' stop will feature a bench with two seats and space for a rollator/wheelchair.
Two pick-up points have been developed under the Hopp' ma' concept, offering seniors and mobility-impaired individuals a safe place to exit their vehicles and quickly access the city center.
The Hopp' ma'-Zone is just one part of the larger project "In Zukunft Detmold", which will cover the costs of the benches and signs. The city administration and GILDE Economic Development are collaborating with the "die Haendler" business community on this project.
The project includes an indoor city map showing public and accessible toilets, air-conditioned and consumption-free resting places, stops, and barrier-free shops. This map will be available digitally and integrated into the Appmold.
The name of the competition for the final name of the Hopp' ma' zone was won by Christian Schmidt. Hopp' ma' is a playful term inspired by the local Lippe dialect, aiming to evoke positive feelings, activity, and participation opportunities for seniors and mobility-impaired individuals.
The Hopp' ma'-Zone is designed to promote a more comfortable city experience for elderly and mobility-impaired individuals, contributing to the overall quality of stay and maintaining the attractiveness of Detmold's city center. This new initiative is a testament to the city's commitment to inclusivity and accessibility for all its residents.
