Display: "Jenischpark Tales Exposition: 'Parkomania'"
Let's Dive into the Greener Side of Hamburg: The Jenisch Park 🌳
Hamburg is a city rich in gardens and parks, but none quite capture the charm like the Jenisch Park. Since its creation in the late 18th century during the height of the "English landscape garden" trend, this gem has been a must-see in the city.
"Park Fever" at the Jenisch House
Ahh, the Jenisch Park! A truly unique experience that brims with history and stories. Currently, the collection of these tales is on display in the exhibition "Parkomania. Untold stories from the Jenisch Park" at the Jenisch House.
Caspar Voght crafted an exceptional fusion of agricultural land and an English landscape garden here in 1785. Voght was way ahead of his time in terms of social reform and created a kind of model farm. As agricultural use ceased, the magnificent summer villa, the Jenisch House, was built. Since 1927, the park has been accessible to the public. During the Nazi era, the city of Hamburg acquired the villa and park.
Snagging the Ugly Truth 🌺
While you might think you know the whole story, this exhibition uncovers some unsightly aspects, such as the darker period of colonialism that enriched the park's owners in the 18th and 19th centuries. Additionally, the exhibition addresses current issues like ecology, as parts of the park are now designated as a nature reserve, the Flottbek Valley.
Fancy a Peek? You Got It!
The exhibition offers a rich program to complement your visit:
- Artistic land projects for children and young people, meant to inspire their imagination.
- Photo workshops to hone your photography skills and capture the park's beauty.
- Exploration tours with illustrator Judith Ganter, for a deeper understanding of the park.
But wait, there's more! Artistic interventions are also on display, such as Susanne Wind's landscape paintings, which showcase her "Four Seasons Jenisch Park" cycle. Firat Kara's series, "The Wild Garden," is another intriguing offering.
