A Waterless Lake Weisensee: Its Future Prospects Revealed - Drought-stricken Wiesensee Lake: An examination.
The Wiesensee lake, located northeast of Westerburg, has been dry for approximately three years due to defects in the sluice gate. However, there's good news on the horizon as the Rhineland-Palatinate Ministry of the Environment has announced that the lake could potentially have water again by spring 2027.
The emptying of the lake was initially caused by defects reported by TÜV Rhineland in late 2021. This unfortunate event has now presented an opportunity for improvements and repairs, with the ministry using it as a catalyst for a comprehensive renovation project.
The tendering process for the renovation is currently underway, and the renovation of the concrete body for the flood relief installation is planned. A comprehensive geological report has been submitted, certifying the necessary stability of the dam, which is currently under review by the responsible authority.
In addition to the physical renovations, a concept for reducing phosphate input from the catchment area is being developed in cooperation with the University of Koblenz. This initiative aims to ensure the long-term health of the lake and its surrounding ecosystem.
Work on a system of ditches is scheduled to begin this fall, and the Verbandsgemeinde is planning to relocate 300,000 cubic meters of sediment within the lake area to restore ecological functions and protect sensitive nature conservation areas. The planned sediment relocation includes the construction of a dam running under the water surface to shield sensitive zones.
The timeline for these improvements and the refilling of the lake is expected to be completed by spring 2027. The café Seewies, a popular spot at the lake, has been closed due to decreasing sales and costs remaining the same. Its owner, Markus Mühlenhaupt, attributes the closure to the lake being dry and local customers making a detour due to the situation.
With the promising news of the lake's potential refilling, there's a glimmer of hope for the return of the Seewies and the revival of leisure activities at the Wiesensee. As the project progresses, updates and further details will be eagerly awaited by the community.
- In the renewal process, the Rhineland-Palatinate Ministry of the Environment is working on a concept for reducing phosphate input from the catchment area, aiming to support a sustainable lifestyle and preserve the health of the lake ecosystem.
- As home-and-garden activities at the Wiesensee lake resume with the lake's expected refilling, the reopening of the popular café Seewies could potentially revitalize local employment opportunities and community gatherings.
