Exploring Creative Activities for Color Learning through the Brown Bear Series
In this week's instalment of our Learning Colours series, inspired by the book Brown Bear, Brown Bear What Do You See?, we delve into the world of white craft activities for kids. The focus this week is on the white dog, a creation by F during a recent painting session.
F made a unique white handprint during the painting session, which was later transformed into the white dog. The sculpture was completed using white paint, and the card dog was brought to life with features such as googly eyes, ears, a body, and even a tail that wags. The card dog can also wag its ears, have its googly eyes removed, and be hugged, making it a delightful interactive piece of art.
In addition to the white dog, F also explored various white craft activities. A bowl of white flour was laid out for F to investigate, leading to a bit of a messy kitchen during the flour play. However, the mess was all worth it as F created a minimalist piece of finished artwork using white materials.
F also dabbled in paper towel art, trying out two methods. The results were two movable card dogs, one made from SparkleBox brad and the other from a printable template from Skip to my Lou. These card dogs are not just decorative; they are interactive, with the second dog even having a feature where pulling the tongue causes the ears to pop up.
The creative exploration didn't stop there. F experimented with painting on coloured paper using white paint, creating high-contrast artworks such as winter scenes and abstract patterns. Printable "build your own" crafts like snowmen, penguins, polar bears, and butterflies were coloured and assembled, combining drawing and cutting/gluing skills.
Sculpture-wise, F created a new sculpture using polystyrene discs and pipe cleaners. The sculpture was later dismantled the next day and the pipe cleaners were used with a white colander for a different project.
Leaf rubbing resist art, where leaves are placed under paper and white crayons or paint are rubbed over to create bold white leaf patterns, offered a nature-inspired drawing activity using white. Weaving with cardboard looms and felt succulents was also attempted, incorporating white yarn or material for added contrast and texture.
Paper towel art can involve using paper towels as a canvas for white paint experiments or as material for texture rubbing and paper crafts such as pinwheels or snowflakes. Creating white paper snowflakes from empty toilet paper rolls is a hands-on recycling project that transforms simple materials into decor. Bulk white DIY paper pinwheels are also an easy paper craft for kids to assemble and decorate.
These white-themed craft ideas combine painting, drawing, sculpting, and paper manipulation to foster creativity while using accessible materials like recycled paper rolls, printed templates, and household supplies. For detailed step-by-step instructions, the YouTube video provides a helpful tutorial for making white snowflakes from toilet paper rolls, and printable templates for white winter animals are also freely downloadable.

- F's latest creations extended beyond just the white dog, as they also included exploring various white craft activities related to fashion-and-beauty, such as paper towel art that resulted in movable card dogs.
- In the realm of food-and-drink, F could experiment with creating unique recipes using white ingredients, like a minimalist white truffle pasta or a beautiful white cake decorated with icing and edible pearls.
- To enrich a home-and-garden lifestyle, F could transform a plain white T-shirt into a stylish statement piece through DIY tie-dye techniques, integrating the theme of white without restricting the creativity to just craft activities.
