The Mountain Safety Council (MSC) has partnered with several retail stores this summer to introduce interactive kiosks designed to help customers plan and prepare for their outdoor adventures. The kiosks, which are now available in select Macpac and Bivouac Outdoor stores, offer a range of features to guide customers through the trip planning process.

The kiosks, produced by Axess AG, provide interactive packing list suggestions for classic New Zealand walks and tramps. According to Anthony Murray, a salesperson at Bivouac Outdoor's Christchurch store, the kiosk's packing lists allow customers to spot any gaps on their own lists while shopping. Jono Davies, Assistant Manager at Macpac Nelson, describes the kiosks as a fun, interactive tool that encourages customers to think more about their upcoming trip.

The kiosks also offer updated weather information, gear lists, and in-depth videos to help customers make informed decisions. Kirsten Barkla, a colleague, finds the kiosk fun as it validates packing and points out items she usually relies on others to bring, like a pocketknife. Elliot Vanderspeck, Store Manager at Macpac Taupo, believes the kiosks will serve as a valuable information source for customers, ensuring they have all the right equipment for their adventures and are well-prepared for various situations.

The kiosks are customized to the store's location by playing safety videos for local tracks and providing up-to-date MetService weather forecasts for the area. The software for the kiosks was developed by HeadQuarters N.D.C., a Queenstown-based company. All staff will be trained to provide quality kiosk customer support.

The MSC kiosks are now in Macpac stores: Tower Junction Christchurch, Taupo, Nelson, and Queenstown, as well as in Bivouac Outdoor stores: Wellington, Sylvia Park Auckland, Palmerston North, and Tower Junction Christchurch. MSC Chief Executive Mike Daisley believes the kiosks will help guide customers and keen trampers through a successful planning process. Macpac and Bivouac Outdoor stores are excited to offer this innovative tool to their customers, making it easier than ever to prepare for a safe and enjoyable outdoor adventure.
