Strawberry season has finally arrived in Thuringia, despite a sprinkle of cooler temperatures and some sunny skies. This delightful spectacle unfolds across 141 hectares of fertile land, tended by 16 operations throughout the region.
But not all the fields are bearing yet. Approximately 54 hectares of fresh plantings won't yield this year, meaning Thuringia accounts for just a mere 1% of Germany's overall strawberry farming area. Last year, the Free State proudly harvested around 673 tons of those succulent red gems by domestic producers.
Trouble in the Fields
Just as the first berries began to ripen, Agriculture State Secretary Marcus Malsch highlighted the soured soil beneath. Challenges faced by strawberry growers include escalating production costs and intensifying competition within Europe. The sector remains a beacon for Thuringian fruit and vegetable production, asserted Malsch. Yet as hand-picking remains the exclusive method of harvest, the increasing minimum wage casts a debilitating shadow.
He went on to explain that an operation's response to these challenges ranges from more intensive production methods to an extended growing period with cultivation under foil. The Secretary stressed the value of regional products, but also warned they come with their own premium prices.
The Bounty Wanes
According to the ministry, the strawberry cultivation landscape across Germany has shriveled since 2015. In Thuringia alone, the surface area dedicated to open-field strawberries has collapsed by an alarming 62%. While protected cultivation, like growing under foil or in greenhouses, has expanded, it hasn't been enough to offset the overall decrease.
One of Thuringia's most prominent producers, Erdbeerhof Gebesee, cultivates both open-field and covered strawberries. For this year's harvest, they plan to employ around 90 full-time workers. The strawberries will be distributed among food retailers, sale stands, and farm shops.
Easing Agricultural Burden
Determined to breathe new life into the region's farming sector, the state government has initiated measures such as the bureaucracy hotline, the voluntary nature of the land register, and the Pakt for Growth and Jobs. Such policies aim to ease bureaucratic burdens in the long run, freeing resources for cost savings and investments.
