Battling for a Shoreline Gem: Four Locations Compete for the "Roter Sand" Lighthouse Move

- Four locations are vying for ownership of the Red Sand Lighthouse

Need a change of scenery, old chap? So does the crumbling, historic lighthouse "Roter Sand". Four locales fighting to become the new home of this iconic North Sea landmark: Wilhelmshaven, Bremerhaven, Hooksiel in the Frisian Wangerland, and Fedderwardersiel on the peninsula of Butjadingen. No frontrunner, as of yet, says Thomas Mertz, spokesperson for the German Foundation for Monument Protection, speaking to Deutsche Presse-Agentur.

No decisions have been sealed just yet; things might heat up later in the summer. Keep your eyes peeled!

Time to Haul the Blasted Lighthouse Away

The beloved red-and-white striped lighthouse perched in the North Sea has seen better days. With its grand age of nearly 140 years, it's starting to wobble. A 2019 report revealed the deteriorating maritime marvel's long-term stability hanging in the balance.

No longer required as a guiding beacon since 1964, the protected historical landmark has become an asset of the German government. And they're on the hunt for a suitable new location—and you thought finding a solid real estate agent was tough!

Bremerhaven re-enters the picture. An initial proposed site on the Külken peninsula met with resistance from waterways and shipping administrations. Undeterred, the city has now offered its Lunesiel on the Weser in the city's south as an alternative. According to the German Foundation for Monument Protection, this proposal should be taken into consideration during the selection process.

  • A potential new lifestyle awaits the historic "Roter Sand" lighthouse, as it seeks a new home among the contenders: Wilhelmshaven, Bremerhaven, Hooksiel in the Frisian Wangerland, and Fedderwardersiel on the peninsula of Butjadingen.
  • If the "Roter Sand" lighthouse moves to Bremerhaven's Lunesiel on the Weser in the city's south, it might provide an interesting change for outdoor-living enthusiasts and home-and-garden enthusiasts, blending the charm of heritage with the beauty of nature.
