Frankfurt Turns to Local Businesses to Alleviate Public Toilet Shortage
The city of Frankfurt, Germany, is seeking gastronomers to participate in a new initiative aimed at improving public toilet infrastructure. Known as the "Nice Toilet" program, this venture encourages restaurants, cafes, and bars to make their clean and well-maintained facilities available to the public, free of charge.
In a bid to enhance the available restroom options in busy areas and provide more clean and safe toilets, the Department for Construction and Real Estate (ABI) is inviting interested businesses to join the program. By agreeing to open their restrooms to the public, including non-customers, these establishments will receive financial support from the city in return.
Interest towards the "Nice Toilet" program is growing in Frankfurt, with several restaurant and café owners already registering their intention with the ABI. Additionally, participating businesses may gain more clientele, as potential customers may notice their involvement in the initiative.
The city also aims to revitalize its urban landscape through the program, while simultaneously working on upgrading 26 public toilet locations. These efforts include renovations, new constructions, and the reactivation of closed facilities.
The "Nice Toilet" concept was conceived in 2002 by an agency in collaboration with the city of Aalen in Baden-Württemberg. Since then, the number of participating municipalities in Germany has grown significantly, and Frankfurt is not an exception. Several Hessian towns, such as Melsungen, Wetzlar, Marburg, Idstein, Gießen, Dreieich, Bensheim, and Rüdesheim am Rhein, are involved in the program.
Participating businesses can be easily recognized by the sticker on their doors, which indicates the facilities' specifications, such as accessibility for the disabled and changing stations. A mobile app is also available to provide information on the participating businesses.

As the city of Frankfurt expands the "Nice Toilet" program, businesses may consider offering community aid in the form of vocational training to their employees, thus providing a skilled workforce for home-and-garden services, contributing to an improved lifestyle within the community. In addition, businesses that join the program and open their facilities to the public could potentially attract more customers due to their active participation in the initiative.
