Future library unveiled in Johannstadt: resuming operations
New Open Library Concept Unveiled at Johannstadt Library in Dresden
The much-anticipated "Open Library Concept" at the Johannstadt Library in Dresden has officially opened its doors at its new location on Fetscherstraße 67. The library, which commenced operations on August 13, 2025, is set to become a vibrant and central meeting place in the Johannstadt district.
The library, under the Open Library Concept, boasts a spacious threefold increase in area, providing a welcoming environment for library users. The interior features open furniture, a reading stage, flexible workspaces, and an event room, which is a rare find in libraries.
Janett Rusek, the library's Director, explained the Open Library Concept in a recent interview. She emphasised the library's commitment to serving as a hub for community events, workshops, and author readings. The event room, a highlight of the new library, is set to host a variety of events, including the celebration of the 150th anniversary of Dresden's Municipal Libraries on September 5th.
In addition to books and games, the library offers a diverse range of items for borrowing, including instruments, e-books, and "Tonie figures." These interactive figures are integrated with audio content, providing an engaging way to enjoy stories, particularly during children's storytime sessions or educational activities.
The library also caters to those with varying schedules by offering self-service access outside staffed hours. This means patrons can borrow, return books, and perform other tasks independently. The library is also set to operate at least ten hours a day, seven days a week, starting in September.
Comfortable seating options, such as reading swings and lounge furniture, are provided to ensure a relaxing experience for library users. There is even a terrace area adjacent to a playground at the new location, offering a perfect spot for a leisurely read or a family outing.
For specific details about the Johannstadt Library's operating hours, self-service capabilities, and unique features like the event room and Tonie figures, it would be best to contact the library directly or check their official website.
