The Ruhr area is preparing for a vibrant and blooming spectacle as the International Garden Exhibition (IGA) 2027 approaches. Scheduled to take place from April to October 2027, the event will transform the region into a lush and captivating garden paradise, attracting visitors from far and wide.

At the heart of the exhibition, the Nordsternpark in Gelsenkirchen will serve as the main hub, offering guided tours of the future exhibition site from mid-2025 onwards. The IGA 2027 will feature five future gardens, including one in Dortmund around the Kokerei Hansa.

The gardens, ranging from large to small, will showcase a diverse array of horticultural delights. For instance, the family in Dortmund has designed their small row house garden in the English cottage style, filled with roses, insect-friendly perennials, dahlias, and vegetable plants. Contrastingly, the smallest garden of the event is located in Duisburg and consists only of a few flower pots.

In addition to these show gardens, the IGA 2027 will also highlight numerous private gardens, with approximately 60 being opened to visitors. One such garden belongs to the Baumann family in Essen, who have creatively divided their 300 square meter garden into different areas, including a large terrace, three seating areas, and raised beds for growing vegetables and strawberries.

Another unique garden is the mini-garden at Ludgeriplatz in Duisburg, which was founded eight years ago by a neighborhood initiative. This mini-garden, now a bustling meeting place for the entire neighbourhood, also hosts various art projects.

Garrelt Duin, IGA supervisory board chairman, emphasises that the IGA is an invitation for people to shape the Ruhr area and become active in their own gardens, balconies, backyards, or community projects. The success of the IGA 2027, according to Duin, depends on the people making it their own.

Visitors can explore these gardens and more during the Day of Open Garden Gates, taking place in the Ruhr area on a yet-to-be-announced date. For those planning a visit, an online overview of the garden locations is available to help navigate the verdant landscape of the IGA 2027.

With anticipation growing, the IGA 2027 promises to be a green oasis for all, attracting at least 2.6 million people throughout the Ruhr area. So, mark your calendars and get ready to immerse yourself in the floral splendour of the Ruhr area's International Garden Exhibition 2027.
