Germany's most frequently chosen baby name for the fourth consecutive year is Noah.
In the latest research conducted by Babell, the popular baby name website, the most popular girls' names in Germany for 2024 have been revealed.
For the fourth consecutive year, Noah tops the list, maintaining its strong and lasting appeal among German parents. The name, of Hebrew origin and meaning "comfort" or "the bringer of rest", has gained popularity worldwide, including in English-speaking countries and Belgium, indicating its broad international appeal.
The top three names for girls in Germany remain unchanged, with Emilia, Emma, and Mia holding their positions. Mia, a short form of Maria and Mary, replaces Sophia, which has moved down to fourth position.
There are some changes in the lower ranks. Leni moves up four places to 8th, Lia moves up two places to 7th, and Finn is back in 5th place after slipping significantly out of the top 10 last year. Ben, a name popular for over 10 years, is losing popularity and is now in 13th place.
Henry/Henri is continuing its upward trend, now in 4th place. No new names are introduced in the top 10 most popular girls' names.
The research was based on an analysis of baby galleries, birthplace websites, and statistics from official registry offices. Babell examined almost 145,000 birth registrations from January to December 2024 to compile the list.
The reasons behind Noah's sustained popularity in Germany were not specifically mentioned in the research results. However, general knowledge suggests that the name's biblical origin, easy pronunciation, and positive associations (e.g., with the story of Noah's Ark symbolizing protection and new beginnings) may contribute to its appeal in Germany as well.
For more detailed reasons from Babell’s 2024 study or direct cultural insights for Germany, a dedicated report from Babell would be needed, as current results do not cover this.
