Guide to Reducing Carbon Footprint at Home: Detailed Walkthrough to an Eco-Friendly Tomorrow

In a concerted effort to combat climate change, governments around the world are investing in the modernization of public and private buildings. Beijing launched a support fund in 2023, aiming to modernize buildings within the city. Similarly, Canada allocated $2.000 million to a large-scale rehabilitation plan in 2020. These initiatives are part of a global movement towards sustainable energy transformation. The European Union has set a deadline for member states to renovate their least efficient buildings by 2026, under the new Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (2024). Meanwhile, countries like Germany have launched comprehensive plans to modernize old buildings. The revised Buildings Energy Act (GEG), effective from January 2024, mandates at least 65% of heating to come from renewable sources, accelerating the energy transition. Austria, too, has initiated strategies, including a federal plan to expand geothermal energy and modernize energy infrastructure. Singapore, on the other hand, is incentivizing green building practices through the Green Mark Scheme. The city-state also pioneered the implementation of a shared cooling system in Tampines, reducing 1,000 tons of CO2 annually and saving enough energy for 710 homes each year. Colombia and Malaysia have also traced their national roadmaps for carbon-neutral buildings in 2023 and 2023 respectively, including energy rehabilitation in their National Energy Transition Roadmap and National Energy Policy. Retrofitting existing homes and buildings is an indispensable condition for climate survival. The Italian Superbonus 110% allowed citizens to fully finance improvements to their homes, approving over 122,000 projects and creating 410,000 jobs in just one year. However, no country currently meets the minimum annual target of 2.5% of buildings renovated to achieve carbon neutrality by 2030. This underscores the need for continued global effort and cooperation in this critical area. In conclusion, governments worldwide are taking significant strides towards modernizing buildings and promoting sustainable energy practices. While progress has been made, there is still much work to be done to meet the goals of carbon neutrality and climate survival.
