Lego Game Boy Test Drive: Nintendo's Intensity Surpasses Expectations
The Lego Group has announced the release of a new product that is set to rekindle nostalgia for the original Game Boy – the Lego Game Boy. This brick-sized handheld, featuring 421 pieces, will be available for purchase on October 1 at a cost of $50.
The Lego Game Boy is designed to closely resemble the original Game Boy in terms of size and design. It boasts pressable A, B, Start, and Select buttons, moveable contrast and volume dials, and a sliding power switch. Two cartridges are included with the Lego Game Boy: one for Super Mario Land and one for The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening.
In addition to its faithful recreation of the classic gaming device, the Lego Game Boy also includes three lenticular cards that show motion when viewed at different angles. These cards depict the iconic Nintendo logo, Super Mario Land, and The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening.
The Lego Game Boy was on display at Nintendo's "holiday showcase" for upcoming Switch 2 titles, making it one of the upcoming titles showcased at the event. While the person who had the idea to create the LEGO Game Boy is not explicitly named, LEGO Ideas projects like this are typically initiated by dedicated fans or community members who design and propose sets for official LEGO approval.
The writer, who worked at Input and was the first person to modify the Lego NES set to be playable, expresses excitement about the prospect of building and modifying the Lego Game Boy. He admires the Lego Game Boy, comparing it to the Lego NES set released in 2020.
The Lego Game Boy set also comes with stands for displaying the Game Boy and cartridges on a bookshelf or display case. However, it does not lock the cartridge in place with a pop-out link cable cover.
The Lego Game Boy is a product that not only generates excitement for fans of the original Game Boy but also generates revenue for Nintendo. It is a display piece resembling nearly 1:1 dimensions of the original Game Boy, offering a unique blend of nostalgia and creativity for both builders and gaming enthusiasts.
