Identifying Porcini and Chanterelles

Porcini mushrooms have a thick, bulbous stem that is usually white to tan, and a large, brown, slightly sticky cap. The underside of the cap has a sponge-like layer of tiny pores rather than gills. Porcini grow near trees like pine, spruce, and fir.

Chanterelles, on the other hand, are bright yellow to orange with a trumpet or funnel shape. Their undersides have ridges that run down the stem, not true gills. They often grow in mossy forests, near hardwoods or conifers.

Foraging Tips

Other edible mushrooms may be found, but it's crucial to only pick mushrooms that are known to be safe. For example, the bolete and Galerina marginata can look very similar, but the Galerina marginata is not poisonous but tastes extremely bitter. It can be recognized by a net-like pattern along the stem and pink pores in larger mushrooms.
