Countdown to the Bavarian Forest State Garden Show is ticking down: Just a week to go, our man, State Environment Minister Thorsten Glauber (Free Voters), paid a visit to the showground in Furth im Wald (Cham district) to check out the progress. This extravaganza will be a stunning showcase for Bavaria and the region, he declared. An impressive 11.3 million euros have been poured into Furth im Wald for this occasion.

The 38th Bavarian Forest State Garden Show sets off on the 22nd of May and keeps the guests captivated until the 5th of October, lasting a delightful 137 days. Minister-President Markus Söder (CSU) is set to perform the opening ceremony, as per the latest town announcements.

Under the motto "Magic: Much to Explore", Furth im Wald promises its guests enchanting garden and landscaping delights, a flower bonanza, artworks, crafts, and the best gourmet treats that the region has to offer. Over 2,600 shrubs, 240 trees, and nearly 150,000 perennials and bulbs have already been planted. Discussions around climate change and dry spells are also on the table. More than 3,000 events are planned.

When it comes to the star attraction, a blood-red dragon steals the show! From dragonskin-patterned flower beds to dragon's cave and tech-savvy dragon tours, the Bavarian forest dragon is the central figure of this legendary exhibition. The dragon is deeply rooted in the town's history, serving as the main character in the historical play "Further Drachenstich" which is considered the oldest live play in Germany, boasting an approximate 500-year-old tradition.

The series of "Further Drachenstich" performances annually in August, is part of the town's folklore and was recognized as an intangible cultural heritage in 2018.

"The city reaps the benefits of the State Garden Show" – says Mayor Sandro Bauer

For the municipality, hosting the State Garden Show translates into a remarkable revamp, emphasizes Mayor Bauer. It offers an excellent opportunity to rectify urban planning shortcomings, such as the development of a new open park arena, which replaced the old festival hall.

At first, the mayor had doubts that the city would be prepared to manage such a grand-scale event, he admitted. However, as the preparations progress, he feels nothing but pride to be the host. The event also pays tribute to the Czech Republic with bi-lingual information boards, reflecting the proximity of the region.

After Furth im Wald, the State Garden Show makes its way to Bad Windsheim in 2027, with the jubilee edition of 2030 happening in Nuremberg.

With a staggering 11.3 million euros in funding from the state and the EU, the budget for Furth im Wald's State Garden Show is the largest ever alloted for such an event, disclosed Glauber.

The Free State has invested roughly 80 million euros in State Garden Shows throughout a period of 45 years. In total, around 550 hectares of land in Bavaria have been greened, revitalized, and made more beautiful through these events. Over 25 million people have flocked to the garden shows.
