With consistently positive feedback and real-world evidence in daily commute, additional spots will be outfitted with the traffic symbol enabling cyclists to make a cautious right turn on red lights under specific conditions, such as a complete stop beforehand.

Statement from Bergisch Gladbach City Council

In an effort to prolong the existing network of green arrows for cyclists at traffic signals in the region, the city of Bergisch Gladbach intends to install additional symbols. Following a wave of positive feedback and practical proof of improved traffic flow, several more locations will be equipped with the sign allowing cyclists to make cautious right turns on red - provided they have stopped first.

"Previously deployed green arrows for cyclists have proven to be a practical and successful addition to managing traffic. They play a vital role in the burgeoning popularity of cycling in our city. I would also like to extend my gratitude to the residents for responsibly using these symbols for the cycling community," says Ragnar Migenda, Deputy Mayor, City of Bergisch Gladbach.

Coming up:

  • Dolmanstraße / Halbenmorgen: Cyclists making a right turn from Dolmanstraße to Straße Halbenmorgen will be able to benefit from a green arrow.
  • An der Gohrsmühle / Zanders-Gelände: Cyclists exiting Zanders company's site onto Straße An der Gohrsmühle will soon see a new green arrow for right turns.
  • Hermann-Löns-Straße / Franz-Hitze-Straße: Cyclists turning from Franz-Hitze-Straße onto Hermann-Löns-Straße towards the city center will soon have a green arrow to guide them.

Not on the list:

  • Dolmanstraße / Alt Refrath: Due to its standing as a high-risk accident zone, any changes, such as a green arrow, need the approval of the accident commission.
  • Kölnstraße / Neuenweg: The heavy traffic flow makes a green arrow impractical at this intersection.
  • Gladbacher Straße / Berzeliusstraße: Legal restrictions and the already established mandatory bike lane prevent a sign from being installed.

Pay heed to the rules, city dwellers! The green arrow isn't a free pass during red lights, but rather signifies the need for a complete stop and careful evaluation of the traffic situation before proceeding.
