Born and raised in the vibrant heart of Brooklyn, New York, Safa Muhammad has tackled the gnarlies of launching her career at a tender age, grappling with stiff competition and age-related roadblocks. In this candid chat, we delve deep into Safa's role as a mother agent and entrepreneur.
Safa paints a day in her life, brimming with action from sunrise to midnight, juggling emails, content creation, and nurturing her models' careers. Despite her jam-packed schedule, she emphasizes the significance of taking a breather and keeping a steady work-life balance, having seen firsthand the havoc overwork can wreak.
Let's dive into your backstory! Please share with us your career voyage and what you're currently engaged in?
I hail from the bustling streets of Brooklyn, New York. My career trajectory has been exhilarating, albeit filled with hurdles. Breaking into the scene was tumultuous due to my youth and dealing with numerous rival agencies. Today, I've managed to breach the closed doors that once kept me out and am now placing models in agencies, fostering their growth by guiding them on leveraging their looks to excel in various projects and identifying their ideal modeling niches.
Eager to gain insights into your daily grind, could you describe a recent workday?
A typical workday tends to begin at six in the morning, where I hop onto my phone, sort emails, and flood my social media with content, reaching out to models for specific looks and pricing details. I also browse sponsored ads for castings that my models may fit perfectly. I remain attuned to my models' well-being, checking in on them weekly to ensure they're content and comfortable. Work hours usually wind down between 11 PM and midnight, as I engage in email exchanges with agencies located in Australia, London, and LA, which requires staying abreast of NYC time for efficient communication.
How does work-life balance resonate with you, and what strategy do you employ to maintain it?
In my books, maintaining a work-life balance means prioritizing self-care when the industry slows and engaging in personal activities during periods of collective hustle. If things grow hectic or I feel overwhelmed, I take a 2-4-hour break to rejuvenate, go for a walk, and listen to some tunes.
Pioneering change is crucial for progress. Have you made any lifestyle alterations over the past year to enhance your work-life balance?
Absolutely! In the past year, I've shifted certain habits to ensure I don't overwork myself. I once sacrificed my health and well-being, foregoing sleep and nourishment to perfect my online presence and land models, which took a toll on my mental and physical health. Now, I make it a priority to eat, sleep, and step outside regularly, understanding the value of self-care in sustaining my energy for work.
We're ever on the hunt for new resources! Could you suggest any books, podcasts, or newsletters that aided you in your pursuit of balance?
At the moment, I don't subscribe to any podcasts, but as my business grows, I plan to launch my podcast catering to the modeling community's needs.
Before signing off, do you have any parting words of wisdom, insights on work, life, or balance that you'd like to share with our readers?
Remember to recharge your batteries, as you'll need that energy to grind. If you wear yourself out, you won't have the stamina to push forward in your professional life.
