New regional supermarket, Food City, expands its reach to its fourth site in Alabama's bustling city.
New Food City Supermarket Opens in Huntsville, Alabama
Food City has expanded its footprint in North Alabama with the opening of a new supermarket in Huntsville. The 57,000-square-foot retail space, located on Memorial Parkway, offers a wide range of amenities, including a full-service pharmacy, gas station, Starbucks, floral boutique, and numerous food options.
The new supermarket is a significant addition to the local grocery market, bringing 180 new area jobs and enhancing neighborhood access to diverse food options and services. This store is part of a $90 million investment by Food City's parent company, Abingdon, Va.-based K-VA-T Food Stores, to build six new stores and create 1,350 jobs in the Huntsville metro over five years.
The store shares many similar features with other Food City new stores but gains importance given Huntsville’s fast growth and Food City’s expanding footprint with multiple existing stores in the area. The strategic inclusion of specialty departments and services, such as an Asian wok, fresh food bar, hickory wood smoker, fresh sushi, in-store catering, and full-service meat and seafood departments, caters to evolving local customer preferences.
Customers can enjoy dining at the large café seating area or opt for curbside pickup and home delivery when shopping online. The store also features a Food City Pharmacy with a drive-thru and a branch of Family Savings Credit Union for financial services.
Huntsville, the most populous city in Alabama, is home to major technology, space, and defense industries, including the Army's Redstone Arsenal, NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center, and Cummings Research Park. The new supermarket's energy-saving concepts, such as energy-efficient glass cooler doors, parking lot lights, refrigeration systems, motion sensors, and 100% LED lighting, are in line with the city's focus on sustainability.
Food City entered Alabama in 2021 with the opening of the state's first Food City store in Albertville. K-VA-T Food Stores, which oversees Food City's operations, operates 161 retail outlets throughout Kentucky, Virginia, Tennessee, Georgia, and Alabama. The company is ranked No. 72 on Progressive Grocer's 2025 list of the top food and consumables retailers in North America.
