Dive into the world of textile mixed media art with Deborah Campbell's online workshop, 'Coastal Layers'. This captivating project, led by the mixed media/textile artist based in Kilmacolm, Scotland, offers a unique opportunity to explore and interpret the natural environment, particularly Scotland’s coastal landscape.
Upon enrollment, participants will have instant and lifetime access to the entire course. The workshop consists of 10 videos and 10 worksheets, totalling 2.45 hours, making it easy to fit into your schedule. The approximate cost of the workshop is £80 ($109*).
Deborah Campbell's textile artwork is inspired by Scotland's Coastal Landscape and Birdlife. Her approach to print is painterly and spontaneous, using simple methods of printing that don't require a lot of equipment. She works on many different fabric textures, including organza and gauze.
The workshop aims to help participants find new ways to use their collected fabrics or bring neglected fabrics back to life. You'll learn how to make a gel plate, create printing blocks, layer and tear fabrics, use collage for composition, free motion machine embroidery, and hand embroidery for embellishment and mark making.
The process begins with observation and inspiration from the natural environment around Comrie, primarily focusing on coastal and landscape elements. Experimental printing techniques are then employed, such as using a gel plate for printing, creating and using handmade printing blocks, printing with plants to capture natural textures, and printing on various fabric weights, including sheers to add depth of color and pattern.
Layering fabrics is a key aspect of the workshop, helping to build up visual depth and complexity. Participants will also learn embroidery techniques, including using the free motion sewing machine as a drawing tool and applying different methods of hand embroidery as mark-making and surface embellishment.
The workshop encourages experimentation and exploration to build confidence in creativity. It also offers a chance to discover and explore the creative side through textile art. Deborah Campbell, the tutor for this workshop, trained in Printed Textiles at Glasgow School of Art, and her Facebook Group is a place to share work, get feedback, and ask questions about the course.
Materials involved in the workshop include different types of fabric (including sheer textiles), gel plates, handmade printing blocks, natural materials like plants for printing, sewing machines, and hand embroidery threads. Participants will find that they can repurpose and recycle neglected or old fabrics, giving them new life as part of the art.
