Pope Leo XIV Steps into the Spotlight, promises to Build Bridges

In an unexpected twist, the Catholic Church has a new leader—Pope Leo XIV, a 69-year-old US citizen and Augustinian monk, who spent part of his life in Peru, winning the hearts of the College of Cardinals in just four rounds of voting.
Robert Prevost, his birth name, made his first public appearance as the new Pope on the central balcony of St. Peter's Basilica at 7:23 PM, less than an hour and a half after the Sistine Chapel's white smoke indicated a decision had been made.
