Preparations for Hessentag in Bad Vilbel, Amid Controversy over Costs

Preparing for Hessentag in Bad Vilbel: Controversy Surrounds Exorbitant Expenses - Preparing for Hessentag in Bad Vilbel: Controversy Over High Expenses

Get ready for the Hessentag, kicking off in Bad Vilbel on June 13th! Spirits are high as the city in the Wetterau district nears the finish line of its preparations for the state festival. "With a dash of tension mixed in, we can't wait for the festivities to begin!" a city spokesperson told the Deutsche Presse-Agentur with a touch of excitement. The event promises over 1,600 activities until June 22nd under the theme "Bringing Hesse to the Stage."

But not everyone's cheering for the pricey shindig. The Hessian Taxpayers' Association is up in arms over the exorbitant costs. Last year, Fritzlar deliberately skipped out on a Hessentag arena due to budget constraints. The association had hoped that "realism and modesty would prevail" post-Fritzlar, but alas, "excess and grandeur" are back in style for Bad Vilbel, according to a spokesperson. With a potential million-euro deficit brewing in the background, the association is bracing for the post-festival letdown.

David Rauber, managing director of the Hessian Cities and Municipalities Association, acknowledges both sides. On one hand, Fritzlar proved that a smaller-scale Hessentag could still be appealing and successful. On the other, Bad Vilbel, being the larger, wealthier city in the Rhine-Main metropolitan area, boasts a larger pool of potential visitors—simply due to its location. An estimated 750,000 visitors are expected in the city for this year's Hessentag, compared to about 519,000 in Fritzlar last year.

Long-term benefits such as improved infrastructure and regional recognition make the Hessentag a valuable event, according to Rauber. Despite financial challenges and the occasional festival cancellations in other Hessian cities, the municipal community harbors wishes of success and harmony for Bad Vilbel's event.

To Note:

  • High Costs of Hessentag - Over the years, the Hessentag has been notoriously expensive, with costs reaching around 20 million euros. The expenses not only involve the event itself but also infrastructure projects in the host city. The security measures, including road closures and security barriers, have accounted for substantial costs.
  • A Comparative Approach - While Bad Vilbel is pouring money into its event, Fritzlar showed a more budget-conscious approach by forgoing a large arena due to financial constraints. This decision was seen as a significant step towards cost-cutting.
  • Rising Financial Struggles - Rising costs for security, hygiene, energy, and labor in the wake of global crises like the COVID-19 pandemic and Ukraine conflict have put pressure on the budget for the Hessentag.
