Thousands Gather for the Annual Blood Ride in Weingarten
On Friday, the traditional Blood Ride procession took place in Weingarten, Germany. The equestrian event, which honors the Holy Blood Relic, is believed to be the largest in Europe.
Approximately 1,800 riders, dressed in tails and top hats, paraded through the city and surrounding fields. The annual procession, which occurs after Ascension Day, witnessed around 20,000 spectators, with some traveling from afar to witness the ceremony.
The Significance of the Holy Blood Relic
At the heart of the procession lies a relic, said to contain a drop of Christ's blood. The relic, a golden cross adorned with precious stones and a crystal center piece, has been venerated for over 900 years. It is usually kept in the basilica's altar for the remainder of the year, but during the Blood Ride, it is carried through the city by the Holy Blood Rider.
The Basilica priest, Ekkehard Schmid, held the relic aloft on horseback, blessing people, animals, houses, and nature during the procession. The relic was handed to Schmid, who is both a Basilica priest and head of the Allgäu-Oberschwaben deanery, at 7 a.m. in front of the Baroque basilica.
Guests of Honor Grace the Event
Each year, guests of honor observe the procession from the town hall balcony. In 2023, Minister President Winfried Kretschmann (Greens) and Manuel Hagel, chairman of the Baden-Württemberg CDU, were among the attendees. Hagel, who normally does not ride, participated in the procession following refresher riding lessons.

The procession wound its way through the city, with brass bands accompanying the riders in the city center. Over the fields surrounding Weingarten, silence was maintained, broken only by the movements of the riders and their horses. Prayers were spoken at several outdoor altars scattered throughout the region.

Due to the large crowds and potential security threats, the police and city have implemented a strict security concept. Access roads were blocked, and drones were employed to monitor the ten-kilometer-long procession route.
