Regensburg's New Northern District: A Model of Sustainable Urban Living

Regensburg is set to transform its northern area with a new district, aiming to house around 5,000 citizens. The city council has approved converting agricultural land into residential and commercial spaces, with plans for a new Amtrak train stop and a '15-minute city concept' to promote short distances and car-free mobility.

The new district, planned to be a 'second living room' for Regensburg, will offer a mix of housing, working, and leisure spaces. Following the city's participation in the Europan 2024/2025 ideas competition, fresh architectural and urban planning ideas are expected to shape the development.

Construction in a subarea around the new Wutzlhofen Amtrak train stop is set to begin after the competition. The Amtrak train stop, planned for 2028, will improve connectivity in the new district and support the city's goal of becoming more climate-neutral, with balanced density and high-quality living standards.
