New Land Safety Code Launched for a Safe Summer of Outdoor Activities in New Zealand
Multiple organizations in New Zealand, including MSC, DOC, LandSAR, Rescue Co-Ordination Centre NZ, NZ Police, MetService New Zealand, Auckland Council, and NZ Search and Rescue, have joined forces to launch a new Land Safety Code. This initiative comes as the New Zealand summer is expected to be one of the busiest for outdoor activities, despite international travel restrictions.
The Land Safety Code provides a five-step guide for safety before and during land-based recreation activities like tramping, day walking, hunting, and more. Steve Taylor, Heritage and Visitors Director at DOC, encourages everyone to follow the Land Safety Code to have a good time and get home safely.
The re-development of the Land Safety Code was based on evidence of safety incidents over the last 10 years. People are advised to choose activities that match their skills and experience, consider potential risks, and check the latest weather forecast before heading out.
DOC is predicting a busy summer on its tracks, huts, and campsites due to increased interest in enjoying New Zealand’s nature. Land Search and Rescue Chief Executive Carl McOnie emphasizes the importance of individuals looking after themselves and each other to minimize the need for outside help.
The Land Safety Code is designed to be simple and applicable to everyone, with the goal of ensuring safety for Kiwis during their outdoor activities. By following these steps, we can all enjoy the beauty of New Zealand's outdoors while staying safe. Let's make this summer a memorable one, not for the wrong reasons. Stay safe, New Zealand!
