Restoration of Drapers' Bastion in Brasov, Central Romania, Funded by EU
The Drapers' Bastion, a historical monument built between 1450 and 1455 in Brasov, Romania, is set for a significant restoration project. Funded primarily by the European Union's European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), the project aims to revitalise the Bastion and integrate it into the city's tourist circuit.
The restoration project, valued at nearly EUR 2.5 million, will receive approximately EUR 2 million (RON 10 million) in non-reimbursable EU funding. The rehabilitation work is expected to last 33 months, with the objective of transforming the Bastion into an interactive museum.
Brasov's mayor, George Scripcaru, has emphasised that the restoration is part of a broader urban regeneration strategy. The Bastion will serve not only as a museum but also as an educational space for students and an entertainment venue, featuring exhibition and interactive functions.
The project includes structural and architectural work, consolidation of various elements, and restoration of historical exteriors and interiors. Key aspects of the restoration include the preservation, restoration, and conservation of original plasters, the installation of new door carpentry, and the revision of the guard walkway on the ground and third floors.
The visiting space will be arranged and equipped with various installations, artistic fittings, and accessible and visitor-friendly equipment. The Bastion's restoration is expected to boost tourism by enhancing its attractiveness and incorporating it more fully into the local tourist offerings.
Moreover, the project is anticipated to support the construction sector during the rehabilitation work and contribute to the economic and cultural revitalization of Brasov through urban regeneration. The restored Bastion is expected to become a vibrant part of the city's everyday life for residents and visitors alike.
The Drapers' Bastion has undergone previous restorations in 1521-1522, 1961-1962, and 2008. However, significant damage has occurred to the metal pavilion of the Bastion since the last intervention. The current restoration project, funded by European funds, presents a unique opportunity to preserve this historical landmark and offer Brasov a distinctive cultural infrastructure.
