Cool Off This Summer: Paris Unveils Swimming Pools in the Seine!
Summertime Swimming Pools Emergence along the Seine in Paris - Summertime Swimming Pools Installed in the Seine River in Paris
Summer's here, and that means it's time for a dip! Paris is shaking things up this year, setting up three public swimming pools right in the heart of the Seine River. One pool will even be nestled near the iconic Eiffel Tower, offering a unique swimming experience as you soak up the city's charm.
"Everyone deserves a chance to swim in the Seine this summer," says French Sports Minister Marie Barsacq. Remember those Olympic Games last year? Well, those million-euro investments in improving water quality have finally paid off. Swimming competitions could've taken place in the river, proving it's now clean enough for even the most serious swimmers.
The pools are set to open on July 5th, with three locations to choose from. One will be near the Eiffel Tower, another by the Notre-Dame Cathedral, and the third near the National Library. Each pool will come equipped with changing rooms, showers, and lifeguards, ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for all. And let's not forget the sunbathing spots—perfect for catching some rays after a refreshing swim.
You might be wondering about the water quality. Rest assured, it's under constant scrutiny. Near the Eiffel Tower, families can even enjoy a dedicated pool area. Swimmers will dive straight into the Seine—not into some ordinary pools filled with water. This has been possible for a while now in the Canal Bassin de la Villette in Paris.
As global warming ramps up and summers get hotter, we need places to cool off, says the Sports Minister. "It's not just about providing a fun activity—it's also about improving our city's quality of life," adds Mayor Anne Hidalgo. A step towards making the river more accessible is closing car traffic along the banks.
Swimming in the Seine has been a dream for Parisians for decades. Although it was officially banned back in 1923, people still took to the waters until the early '60s. But fear not—these days, the water quality is closely monitored, ensuring a safe and enjoyable swim for all!

[1] Water quality is monitored continuously by national agencies to ensure it meets safety standards.[2] Swimming is only permitted when the water quality is deemed satisfactory, as indicated by the color of the flag at each site.[3] The Seine River underwent significant cleanup efforts in preparation for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, with a budget of 1.4 billion euros dedicated to improving the river's water quality. Water quality was closely monitored during the Olympic events, with tests checking for enterococci and E. coli bacteria levels to ensure they were below allowable limits.[4] The swimming areas will be open to the public from July 5 to August 31 as part of the Paris Plages initiative, and access is free.[5] Safety measures, such as pontoons and safety slides, will be in place to prevent accidents with boats and barges.
[1] Vocational training programs focusing on water quality management and monitoring could be implemented within the community policy to ensure the Seine River remains safe for swimming in the long term.[2] Outdoor-living enthusiasts might find it fascinating to engage in vocational training related to lifestyle activities like canoeing, kayaking, or even urban gardening (home-and-garden) in the Seine River as part of a broader initiative promoting outdoor-living in Paris.
