Supermarket chain EDEKA is honored with the MSC Award for Retailer of the Year 2025.
In a significant recognition of its long-standing commitment to protecting the oceans and promoting responsible fishing, German retail giant EDEKA has been awarded the MSC Germany Award 2025 in the 'Retailer of the Year' category.
The MSC Germany Award, presented for the first time, honours outstanding commitment to sustainable fishing. EDEKA's consistent efforts in this area have made it the market leader in sustainable fish.
Rolf Lange, Head of Corporate Communications at EDEKA CENTRAL Foundation & Co. KG, expressed his delight, stating that the award confirms EDEKA's long-standing commitment to sustainable fishing. Kathrin Runge, MSC Program Manager DACH, explained EDEKA's leadership in sustainable fish, highlighting its diverse fish range and strategic goal of sustainability.
EDEKA's diverse fish offerings include fresh, canned, and frozen options. With over 1,000 fresh fish counters offering MSC-certified products, EDEKA's fish range is as diverse as nowhere else.
The Marine Stewardship Council (MSC), an international non-profit organization dedicated to protecting the oceans and fish stocks, bestows the MSC label on fish and seafood from sustainable wild fishing. This label ensures responsible management of fish stocks and eco-friendly fishing methods.
EDEKA participates in the MSC's 'Check Your Fish' campaign to raise awareness about certified fish and sustainable consumption. The retailer also works closely with organisations like WWF to promote sustainable fishing.
The award ceremony took place on September 18 in Büsum. This recognition is a testament to EDEKA's pioneering role in the German food trade, where it has switched to certified sources, promoted regulated fishing methods, and delisted endangered species.
EDEKA's fish range is managed under a clear assortment design, ensuring customers have access to a wide variety of sustainable fish options. This commitment to sustainability has earned EDEKA the title of Germany's Retailer of the Year 2025 by the MSC.
