Swisscom Completes Transition to 100% Electric Car Fleet

Swisscom has completed its transition to a 100% electric passenger car fleet as of April 2025. The telecommunications giant, recognised by TIME Magazine in 2024 as one of the world's 500 most sustainable companies and ranked 7th among Sanofi, has taken this significant step towards reducing its carbon footprint.

The shift to electric vehicles (EVs) is made easier by various apps and infrastructure. Apps like Evpass assist drivers in locating charging stations and managing charging processes and costs. Many parking lots, such as those at workplaces or supermarkets, now offer charging facilities. Home charging stations are also becoming more common, with costs often passed on to tenants via a slightly higher parking fee.

E-cars can be charged using electricity from the user's own socket or charging stations installed in parking lots. A full charge, providing 400 to 600 kilometers of range, costs between 15 to 20 francs, a significant saving compared to the cost of petrol. Switzerland already boasts 17,000 charging stations for electric cars, demonstrating the country's commitment to e-mobility.

Swisscom's ambitious goal is to halve direct CO2 emissions from its vehicle fleet by 2025 and eliminate them by 2030. To achieve this, the company has ordered 1400 electric cars. On-board computer systems in these vehicles alert drivers when it's time to charge the battery, ensuring optimal battery life and performance.

Swisscom's switch to a fully electric passenger car fleet is a notable achievement in its sustainability journey. With the support of charging infrastructure, apps, and cost-effective charging solutions, the company is well on its way to meeting its ambitious emission reduction targets. This move not only benefits Swisscom but also contributes to a cleaner, greener Switzerland.
