Strawberries successfully picked in Thuringia's fields - Thuringia's Initial Strawberry Harvest Completed

Springtime in Thuringia, Germany, has brought forth another crimson wave – the much-anticipated strawberry season is upon us! Despite intermittent sunlight and cooler temperatures, the red splendor of cultivated fields gleams across the state.

The Thuringian farming industry cultivates its juicy offerings through 16 operations on approximately 141 hectares of soil. Interestingly, around 54 hectares of fresh terrain will not yield fruits this year, as the focus lies on new plantings for future harvests. With just 1% of the German strawberry production taking place in Thuringia, it's safe to say our farmers are on the smaller side of things. Last year saw Thuringian producers gather about 673 tons of strawberries. 💻➕📉

A Call to Arms for Growers

As the annual harvest festival in Gebesee, Sömmerda district, approaches, Agriculture State Secretary Marcus Malsch highlights the struggles faced by the farming community. Concerns range from surging production costs to heightened competition within the European agriculture market. "Despite notable production reductions over the years," Malsch points out, "the strawberry remains a shining star in Thuringian fruit and vegetable production." 🏆🌟

Bracing for the Minimum Wage HikeThe upcoming minimum wage increase poses a considerable challenge, Malsch remarks. "A labor-intensive process such as hand-picking strawberries naturally feels the weight of such changes." To combat this, growers are adopting more intricate farming approaches or extending their reach through foil-grown produce. But alas, all good things come with a cost, and consumers must appreciate the regional treasure for the pricing it fair! 💸🍓

Decline in Domestic StrawberriesThe German farming sector has seen a decline in the total acreage dedicated to strawberries since 2015. In Thuringia, the production of open-field strawberries has dropped by a whopping 62% during that period. Although there has been a growth in protected cultivation methods (especially under foil or in greenhouses), the overall decline persists.

The Erdbeerhof Gebesee, one of the largest producers, prides itself on open-field cultivation and foil-grown berries. Around 90 full-time laborers will join the effort this year, ensuring that these delectable fruits reach supermarkets, roadside stands, and farm-fresh shops throughout the region. 🚽🛒🍓

Bureaucracy Be Gone!Malsch discussed the state government's plans to alleviate the agricultural sector. "Reducing bureaucratic burdens and promoting growth and jobs" are their primary objectives through initiatives such as the bureaucracy hotline, voluntary land registries, and the Pact for Growth and Jobs.
