THW Pumps Water Over 2.5km to Fight Gohrischheide Fire
In the Gohrischheide fire incident, the Technical Relief Agency (THW) is providing crucial support. They are pumping water from a nearby gravel pit in Boragk using a large pump and a 2.5-kilometer-long hose line. Three THW water bladders are positioned along the hose line, allowing firefighters and local farmers to access water.
The THW's specialist group Water Damage/Pumps, which exists in over 80 units nationwide, is assisting in the operation. This group specialises in pumping water or mud from buildings and roads during floods. In this case, they are transporting water over a long distance to supply firefighters with water.
Mobile water transport is a key task of the THW units. Their large pumps have a conveying capacity of up to 25,000 liters per minute, ensuring a continuous supply of firefighting water. The Landesverband Saxony, Thuringia has two THW large pumps stationed in Riesa and Apolda, playing a central role in challenging deployment situations like this one.
The THW's involvement in the Gohrischheide fire incident highlights the importance of cooperation between fire departments and the agency, especially in the face of increasing extreme weather events and large-scale incidents. Their ability to transport water over long distances and pump it at high volumes is a significant asset in ensuring the supply of firefighting water in challenging situations.
