Wiesbaden's Nerostraße Redesign: A Green and Inclusive Urban Space

The city of Wiesbaden is transforming its Nerostraße and Jawlenskystraße into a more sustainable and livable urban space. The redesign project, which has been in the works since April 2025, aims to create a space where people like to stay, promote social participation, and adapt to the challenges of the climate crisis.

The redesign has created approximately 36 square meters of new green space along Nerostraße. Twelve large wooden plant boxes now accommodate trees, adding more greenery to the area. This expansion of green space will help improve air quality, reduce temperatures, and provide pleasant recreational spaces for residents and visitors.

To slow down traffic and create more room for pedestrians, a 20 mph zone has been established. This measure benefits mobility-impaired people, those with strollers, and all pedestrians who use the street. The one-way traffic regulation remains in place, but parking will be reorganized with clearly marked, alternating parking spaces on both sides.

The redesign of Nerostraße is the result of an intensive process with broad public participation. The city council, the Tiefbauamt of the state capital Wiesbaden, and the Wiesbaden Mitte district council have collaborated closely to develop the solution now being implemented. Dr. Guido Haas, chairman of the Wiesbaden Mitte district council, emphasizes that the people's engagement is the driving force of the Nerostraße project.

The project is funded by the municipal garage fund and the federal funding program "Future-proof inner cities and centers". The official opening of the redesigned Nerostraße is planned for late August.

The initiative "Friends of a livable Nerostraße" will take care of the further care of the new green space. Thomas Schachler from the initiative "Livable Nerostraße" stated that the redesign gives people more space, promotes stay quality, safety, climate adaptation, and social participation, and aims to be a role model for other inner-city neighborhoods.
