World Stunned by Unexpected Ripple: Repercussions Far and Wide

The second stint of Donald Trump in the White House has induced seismic waves far beyond US borders, causing a worldwide shock.

Greenland

Trump, during his previous term, had expressed an interest in acquiring Greenland – a Danish autonomous territory. This time around, he not only revived his interests but also demonstrated more aggression in his intentions, hinting at the use of force. The reasons given are the strategic importance of Greenland due to its geostrategic position and the potential wealth of rare earths and minerals within. However, Greenlanders have declared that they are not for sale. Instead, they are open to international commercial agreements, like with the United States, that could finance their potential independence from Denmark. As of now, it seems Washington is putting more pressure on the White House to negotiate. This potential crisis is deeply concerning for Copenhagen, which appears powerless to counteract American threats.

European Union

The relationship between Trump and the EU has always been turbulent. It has taken a turn for the worse since 2021, as both parties seem to be operating on completely different wavelengths. Economically, politically, and on values grounds, the two former allies appear to be drifting apart. A speech in Munich by Vice-President J.D. Vance, accusing the EU of "destroying democracy," created an electric shock effect in Europe, as the ground beneath the transatlantic alliance seems to be crumbling. The rapprochement between Trump and Putin and the exclusion of the EU from peace negotiations in Ukraine have accentuated this slow rupture. Europe now realizes that they can no longer depend on Washington as both a partner and a protector. Fearing American disengagement from NATO and a potential Russian threat, the EU has shifted its focus towards defense, unlocking 800 billion euros for its own protection. Germany has embarked on a complete rearmament campaign "no matter the cost."

Africa

During the first term, Trump largely ignored Africa, even referring to the continent's countries as "shithole countries." The outlook for his second term doesn't seem much better, at least when it comes to humanitarian aid. The suspending of the U.S. international aid program (USAID) could spell disaster for several sub-Saharan African countries. On the commercial front, the continent remains on edge as Trump has hinted at not renewing the AGOA (Africa Growth and Opportunity Act), which allows around 30 African countries to export their products to the U.S. tax-free. However, in a context where Washington is attempting to counter China's growing influence in Africa, Trump might choose to maintain certain trade agreements or even establish partnerships with specific countries, potentially rich in minerals. It will be interesting to watch the evolution of his diplomatic spat with South Africa.

Latin America

The new administration has adopted a hostile attitude towards Latin America since taking office. The region is perceived as a security risk due to issues like drug trafficking, uncontrolled immigration, and Chinese influence. Tariffs have been imposed, and drug trafficking groups have been designated as terrorist organizations, among other measures, to pressure Mexico to tighten its border controls. Other countries have been put under pressure to accept the return of migrants currently in the U.S. Some countries are fighting back, distancing themselves from Beijing's Belt and Road Initiative.

Ukraine and Russia

Trump has stated that he could end the war in Ukraine in 24 hours, even suggesting that he could do so before taking office. However, reality proved more complex. Trump put pressure on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, demanding a commitment to a complete ceasefire. After obtaining Kyiv's commitment, Washington turned its attention to Russian President Vladimir Putin, who has maximum demands, making a resolution of the conflict in the short term highly unlikely. European countries are mobilizing to offset the decrease in U.S. military support for Ukraine while worrying about the possibility that the U.S. may distance itself from NATO.

China

Trump sees China as his main adversary and has implemented aggressive actions to counteract Chinese influence in Asia and beyond. He has imposed 145% tariffs on imports from China, which is accused of abusive trade practices. The Chinese government has refused to give in to American threats and has retaliated with tariffs. AMERICAN HEAD OF STATE has hinted at the annexation of the Panama Canal and Greenland, causing a stir in Beijing. Experts fear that Trump's annexationist rhetoric may embolden the Chinese regime to show more aggression towards Taiwan.

Gaza

Trump shook the world soon after taking office by regarding the Gazans, a small territory that has been ravaged since the beginning of the war between Israel and Hamas in 2023. "I would like them to live in a region where they can live without disturbances, without revolution, and without violence," President Trump said on January 28. Trump's proposal to relocate the Gazans was met with widespread condemnation, except in Israel, where Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu hailed the idea as "remarkable." This reignites the debate about economic sanctions, military intervention, and the question of Israel's ongoing occupation of Palestinian territories.
